Parental control mechanisms (rating and filtering) are a means of empowering parents to improve safer use of the Internet by their children. A number of different technical approaches are being supported.
The creation of an international self-labelling system is being promoted by ICRA. This project will build on existing work on content-labelling pioneered by RSACi, and the results of earlier preparatory consultations undertaken with the EU support through the INCORE study.
Other projects will address the issues through enhancements to existing filters, third-party rating of sites for trustworthiness and experimentation with the application of semantics to build improved labeling systems and filters.
A further call for proposals for filtering software and services is being planned for the end of 2000, to close end May 2001.
